Outfitting Your Patio for Spring

The Smart Way to Furnish Your Den or Family Room in 3 Easy Steps

by Anne Wells

Have you designated a room in your house as a den or family room? If so, you will want to furnish it in a way that is both comfortable yet functional. While you can find many types and styles of furniture at most furniture stores, you may have specific requirements or ideas in mind. Whether you want to transform a room into your private retreat, or you need a place to get some work done, consider the following:

1. Decide What You'll Use Your Den or Family Room For

Will your den be a multi-purpose family room of sorts? Will it be used to enjoy activities such as watching TV, enjoying crafts, or reading? If so, you'll want to furnish the room with a comfortable couch and a couple of soft, cushioned chairs.

Perhaps you will use the den to accomplish homework or computer based home office tasks. In that case, you'll need a functional computer desk or workstation. Your local furniture store should have what you need. By the same token, don't overlook the importance of good lighting. Inquire about your lighting options at the furniture store.

Do the kids spend hours playing video games? Do they need a spot where they will be out from under foot? If so, furnish the den appropriately with a video rocker gaming chair. These chairs are ergonomically designed for good posture and comfort.

2. Consider Investing in Stain Resistant Fabrics

The den is one room in the house that will probably see a lot of activity and use. If you have young children and pets, that brand new off-white sofa may end up looking tan in no time. A good way to protect your investment is to choose the option of stain resistant fabrics for your upholstered chairs, couch or daybed. While you're at it, inquire about fabrics that are also resistant to moisture and odors.

3. Choose Accessories to Reflect Your Individual Style

Furniture stores sell more than beds, sofas, tables, and chairs. They are a great place to choose home decor and accessories as well. For your den or family room, why not choose wall art that reflects your style? Perhaps you have a particular angle in mind, such as a nautical or beach theme.

Artificial plants and rubber trees are often sold at furniture stores and these may give your den a nature-inspired feel. How about a colorful throw rug for the kids to cozy up on while reading? All of these accessories can often be found at a home furniture store.
