Three Types Of Dining Room Furniture For A Small Apartment

by Anne Wells

If you live in a small apartment, you may be limited in terms of space for your dining area. Whether your apartment has a small dining area or a separate dining room, you will want to choose furniture that is functional and that also maximizes your space. You can have practicality as well as aesthetically appealing design if you know what to look for. The following is a look at three types of dining room furniture designs that will work in a small space:

1. The Dinette Set

Dinette sets are typically smaller in design than the standard, more formal dining room table and chairs. The dinette table is somewhat smaller, often without an extension or leaf. You'll typically find these sets come with three or four dining chairs. These are perfect for informal meals in a small apartment. If your apartment does not have a separate dining room, this option would be ideal to place in an area just off of the kitchen.

A three-piece corner dinette set (table and two chairs) would fit in a small corner of a kitchen or dining area nicely. Alternatively, you might want to choose a small pub set that comes with two stools, as it may take up even less space.

2. A Pair of Counter or Bar Stools

Does your apartment have a kitchen counter that is designed for eating snacks and light meals? If so, a counter stool or two is an ideal solution that is also ideal for small spaces. If you do not have an eat-in kitchen, this is something you might want to consider. Counter and bar stools are typically sold in most furniture stores that offer dining room sets. Choose between swivel or stationary styles.

Keep in mind that bar stools are typically taller than the counter stools. Both are available with various padding and upholstery. Choose genuine or faux leather or some type of fabric. Some styles of stools feature a padded back for comfort.

3. The Corner Buffet (With or Without Hutch) or Side Table

A buffet table is an essential piece of dining room furniture. It serves more than one purpose. You can place a small lamp on this side table for extra lighting in the corner of the room. Most commonly, buffet or side tables are used for storing dining essentials, such as dinnerware and such. You may have limited space, but your options should not be limited. Why not choose a corner buffet that fits nicely in the corner of your dining area?

If you require extra storage space, a hutch is a perfect solution. The buffet table with included hutch (or a hutch sold separately) will not take up extra space in your small apartment. That is because the hutch sits on top of the table. Basically, the hutch is shelves or a cabinet. It's used for storing dining needs and essentials. You'll find buffet tables in a wide variety of types of wood (and laminate, too) to complement most any decor.
